The Mexican burrowing toad is probably most famous for the male’s bizarre breeding call. It makes a load, drawn-out “WHOOOOOOOA” sound that can be heard over four kilometres away. In fact, in Spanish the toad is called sapo borracho, meaning “drunk toad”, as the call of the male has been likened to the sound made by shiploads of drunk and vomiting sailors.
